Has anyone done any self-publishing? It seems so not right, but if it is cheaper and can still reach a certain number of potential readers maybe I shouldn't dismiss the idea so readily.

I think it depends a lot on the nayure of your book. If it's local history or a cookbook, then you might be better off going the self-publishing route. Personally, I wouldn't try self-publishing a novel until I'd tried my best to get an agent and a contract, but that doesn't mean that I frown on self-publishing.

If you self-publish and you can get your book listed with the big, online book stores, you might do quite well. From what I've read, authors are now expected to do a lot of the promotion for their book themselves, so whether you self-publish or use an agent to get to a big house might not matter as much anymore.

I think it's more rambling than rational advice. :)
